Tansy Ragwort (Any composite plant of the genus Tanacetum, a strong scented, weedy, Old World herb, having clusters of yellow flowers. The yellow flowers only bloom in the spring and summer but the plant is poisonous all year long. Animals will develop a taste for the plant in the early spring when the plant leaves are tender and not so bitter as later in the plants life.
Livestock owners should be aware that local grass hay may sometimes contain this weed if the hay fields are not properly maintained and/or sprayed to kill the weed and it is just as poisonous in it’s dried form if ingested. The poison will build up within the animal and over a period of months the liver will eventually fail resulting in death.
All pastures at Columbia View Stables are carefully manicured and sprayed to prevent this weed from growing and from being baled in it’s own baled grass hay.
